Home Ownership

Homestead exemption checklist for new Texas homeowners

A residence homestead exemption reduces the taxable value of your primary home and caps how much your assessed value can rise each year. It is also, reliably, one of the first things missing from a new homeowner's account.

Do you qualify

In general, the property must be your principal residence as of January 1 of the tax year, and you must own it. Texas also offers additional exemption amounts for homeowners who are 65 or older or disabled.

When to file

Most counties accept homestead exemption applications for the current tax year, with a general filing window that can extend up to two years after the deadline for homeowners who missed it. Filing earlier means the exemption applies sooner, not just eventually.

  • Confirm your closing date qualifies you as of January 1 of the tax year
  • Gather your Texas driver's license or ID showing the property address
  • File directly with your county appraisal district, there's no fee
  • Check whether you also qualify for an over-65 or disability exemption

It's a short form. It's also one of the few property tax steps that's entirely in your hands, no protest, no hearing, just paperwork that's easy to put off.
